According to Article 342 of the Constitution, the Scheduled Tribes are the tribes or tribal communities or part of or groups within these tribes and tribal communities which have been declared as such by the President through a public notification. As per the 2011 Census, the Scheduled Tribes account for 104.3 million representing 8.62 percent of the country’s population. Scheduled Tribes are spread across the country mainly in forest and hilly regions.
The scheduled tribes in rural areas of india account for 93.8 million and 10.5 million constitute the urban tribal population. There has been 29.4 percent decadal change in the rural tribal population where as the urban tribal population has shown a decadal change of 43.6 percent.
